Mr. Sims has had the privilege of performing with such artists as Benny Golson, John Pattitucci, Freda Payne, Danilo Perez, Gerald Wilson, Arturo Sandoval, Bob Mintzer, Paquito D’Rivera, Jon Faddis, Ingrid Jensen, Bobby Shew, Randy Brecker, Bobby Watson, Pancho Sanchez, Wynton Marsalis, James Moody, Ron Miles, Martha Reeves, and many others. While living in Portland, OR Mr. Sims judged at the many jazz festivals in the Pacific Northwest area. He was on the faculty of the Mel Brown Jazz Camp from 2003-2017. Concurrently, Mr. Sims was the Director of Jazz at the Metropolitan Youth Symphony from 2004-2015. He also was an Adjunct Professor of Jazz Trumpet and the Jazz Band Director at Portland State University from 2013-2018. After these two stints Mr. Sims started PJAZZ (The Portland Jazz School), and coached jazz combos from 2018-2021. After moving to South Florida in 2022, Mr. Sims maintains a private studio of jazz improv students and is working as a jazz director at the Coral Springs Charter School, and a music coach at the Somerset Silver Palms Charter School. DAVID FERNANDEZ is a Grammy and Latin Grammy award winner who began his career as a jazz musician in Miami, Fl. He first studied jazz at Miami Senior High School under the direction of Dr. Brian Leavell. He earned an invitation to New York to perform with the McDonald’s All-American High School Band his senior year. He also won an honorable mention from Downbeat Magazine for best high school performer, and won first place for Best Original Composition. He received a 2023 Grammy for his work on the “Best Reggae Album”, The Kalling by Kabaka Pyramid. His Latin Grammy Award was for his performance on “Made in Miami”, by Richard Bravo and Camilo Valencia. Upon graduation, he enrolled at the University of Miami and earned his Bachelor’s Degree. Shortly after, he continued his studies at Florida International University under the direction of Gary Campbell and completed his Master’s Degree. David began his career touring with latin pop-star Chayanne. Along the way, he has toured with such artists as Jon Secada, Gloria Estefan, Darryl Tookes, and K.C. and the Sunshine Band. He has shared the stage with Joe Henderson, Paquito D’ Rivera, Randy Brecker, Kenny Werner, Gerry Mulligan, Bob Mintzer, Willy Chirino, Nestor Torres, Rafael, The O.J.’s, The Funk Brothers, Peabo Bryson, Nate Smith, Ignacio Berroa, Patti Austin, and Queen Latifa. Didier Labossiere was born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in Miami, Florida. The son of Haitian immigrants, Didier’s heritage is deeply rooted into his music, from the jazz sounds of Chicago to the Caribbean and Latin sounds of Miami, which had a major influence on his musical development. Didier fell in love with music at the age of six. He began his music education in high school under his mentors Ralph D’ Ovidio and Ed Manina at North Miami Senior High. After high school Didier continue to perfect his craft and study under many musicians such as Gary Keller, Richi Perri, Neal Bosanti, Mike Rossi and Randy Emerick. Soon after, Didier began his professional career with the cultural group Koleksyon Kazak, a Haitian roots band that blended Jazz with traditional Haitian country music. An aficionado of diverse sounds and styles, Didier has played with bands that range from Bebop, Jazz, Urban, Tribal Funk and R&B with various bands such as the Jazz Five, The John Chapman Jazz Ensemble, The Baboons, Drummer Duffy Jackson and Joey Gilmore. Didier also was the lead and front man of his own band called D-Jazz Funk. Throughout his career Didier has had the opportunity to perform with the legend David Lee Roth of Van Helen, the world renown organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Mike Longo of the Dizzy Gillespie Band. Didier has been with the Valerie Tyson Band for 17 years and is currently the musical director of the band.
